Jesus Would Forgive, But a Daddy Don’t Forget

With Apologies to Collin Raye for the theft a line from his 90s hit ‘Little Rock’. It was a pretty powerful line from his song, and has always stuck to me when I’ve been in a situation where there’s not a point in staying angry, but there’s a point where you won’t involve yourself with that person anymore either.

Sunday evening while helping my parents fix some minor issues with their Calendar, My Dad told us that he thought it was best we didn’t come see them for Christmas.

GIT-ing Things Done

For several months now during this mess of a pandemic I have been playing with my 3D printers that I picked up last April. I should say, I’m playing with one of the printers more, which is my Anycubic Photon S. A few months into the quarantine I discovered a number of Patreons that sell STL files for resin printing of miniature figures that you can then paint and admire or paint and use in your Dungeons and Dragons game, or whatever you want to do with them.

That’s Great It Starts With an Earthquake

…and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.

So the Covid19 pandemic is in full swing.   It’s the first weekend of April, 2020.  Lots of things have been disrupted, but for us other than me not driving to work every day things have not changed much yet.   Fortunately my job is solid, and I’m staying busy during the day.   There are noticeable differences, but nothing frightening.

My wife continues to work in her already work from home role.   Hers is healthcare related, so we might get an eye into the mess that is this pandemic more than the normal household, and it’s taking a toll on her some as phone calls are coming in from the major US hotspots like NY, CA, WA and now growing to other areas.

I’d love to be able to say we’re weathering the storm, but with the idiot in chief still there, I’m hoping that someone will wake his dumb ass up.  I thought for sure as shit started to hit the fan he might not be as horrible as he is.   I wanted that Bush moment where while I wasn’t a fan of his policies, he stood on that rubble pile and America rallied behind him.

Instead, when tossed a softball question up where he could have done it, he yelled at the reporter for asking it and was his usual petulant self.

So if we survive this mess with a <2% of the US population bodycount, I’m sure they’ll say it was all the democrats fault and a hoax, not that all these people working in spite of the president at the state level are doing their best to keep it under control

Time will tell, I’ve lost all optimism that America will act appropriately anymore.

I could drive 5000 miles and I could drive 5000 more

So we did our big trip for the year to Kansas like we do every year for Christmas. This is something we’ve done now for going on 10 to 15 years.  I can’t remember when we switched from driving to flying it was pretty early on.   I’ve taken that trip in a Chrysler Pacifica, a Toyota Hybrid Highlander, a Ford Flex, a Ford Explorer, a Ford Expedition and now a Tesla Model X.   We got that Pacifica in 2004 I think, and it had a DVD system (the only car) and let me tell you listening to the same six movies got really old.   The kids were too young to use the two headsets.   When we got the Flex I did the math and bought them all an iPad instead, cheaper, and I didn’t have to hear Toy Story.   Don’t get me wrong, still love the movie, but funny things like ‘oh hey, that’s Combat Carl parts that bounce off the house’ when you see it after hearing it only.

I figured I’d post some stats. Fortunately because I had an Automatic Pro on my Expedition EL that we sold for the Model X for and I have the miles and gas consumption/cost (mostly). So lets look at maps and numbers and see how things changed.

3000 Miles in the Tesla Model X

Today marks the second month anniversary of us swapping out our 2016 Ford Expedition EL for a 2019 Tesla Model X. We’ve taken a couple of short trips, one ending in disaster. Nothing super dramatic or related to the fact it’s an EV, but a staple, and the shoulder of a tire.

When you’re 1/4 the way between Raleigh, NC and Charleston, SC there isn’t a lot open on a Sunday AM, and even less with a rear tire for a Model X. So i bought two ‘for 15″ tire’ cans of spray foam, filled the tire with it, crammed it with 50PSI of air and ran for home.

Made it to a nearby Just Tires that was open, but they wanted almost $400 for the single wheel. I had researched TireRack and a few other places and that seemed high for a single wheel tire swap. After some more research at home, ended up ordering from Discount Tire, and their first open appointment was Saturday. Ended up driving the bolt for a week, and then got it swapped out the next weekend. Happy Thanksgiving to me!

Out the door for $300 installed. They’re 20 Inch rims, so didn’t get the giant ones. About the same price for a single wheel on our Expedition that also had 20s. There’s nothing fancy about the tires on an X.

So our ‘longer’ road trip test got messed up so our next big trip is the 1100 mile one back home to Kansas. I’ve done all I can to plan it best to locate a super charger where we are ending up for the day. The only downside is at my parent’s new place in town they don’t have 240V in the garage, so trickle charge it is. There are a few L2 Spots in Lawrence, KS but Topeka and Overland Park have the superchargers. Long as I can get to Star Wars and back home, we’re good the first few days.

That was a Valiant Effort

During the week of Thanksgiving 2019 I had some time off. Usually that is a dangerous thing, as I don’t really do much. For years, I have been running an open source social network called Diaspora. I haven’t really been focused on it any more, and decided that paying for a digital ocean droplet to run it just wasn’t worth it to me anymore.

With that decision made, I nuked the droplet. Then, two minutes later all my site monitoring messages started triggering and getting emails. The first few were expected, then the important one popped from Jetpack. The Blog is unreachable.

It was at that moment he knew, he fucked up.

So, with that my blogging adventures of the last close to twenty years went poof. No backups, no nothing that I can find. I thought maybe the last time I migrated I kept it around but I didn’t. So, that’s it. Everything is gone, and here we go again.
